The annual Turing competition was last week. [Link] In this competition, computer programs attempt to fool humans into perceiving the programs are human. The method of this is the Turing test whereby two entities – two humans or a human and a program – communicate via text messaging, teletype in its original form, IM or chat today.
None of the programs were successful above a rather minimal level although the judges were people selected for ability to perceive the distinctions.
Rather reminds one of “Blade Runner” doesn’t it?
I have to admit to being rather intrigued with a couple of aspects of this. For example, how often are there false negatives when the human at the other end of the chat is a nerd, introvert, Asperger’s individual, ….? And similarly when the other end is a human psychotherapist/psychiatrist who is not very interested in the proceedings?
